Remember the Moment?

Leave a comment Standard

I’m sure we all remember the exact moment when we heard the Twin Towers had been hit by commercial jets. This moment obviously changed millions of lives forever, near and far.

Although it’s been 12 years, those wounds are still fresh for those directly affected by the day that changed the world. While there are many different versions of what happened that day and who is to blame, innocent people’s lives were forever changed.Β So on this somber day, embrace the moments that make you happy.

Those moments for me today were:

  • feeling the 92 degree Fahrenheit heat and humidity of a September day (although it was kind of hard to bear)
  • my delicious iced coffee
  • the little old black dude dressed in the peach-colored suit
  • a man taking a work break in his foldable lawn chair, listening to his boom box
  • listening to the intelligent ramblings of an 8 year old
  • the guy chair dancing on the subway
  • knowing I made my family excited because they got the treat package I sent πŸ˜‰
  • and this…

I love the mariachi on the subway. But today the mariachi band was not a band, it was just one old guy. And he was awesome. That’s all.

There’s This Woman

Comments 6 Standard

There’s this woman that I often see in my neighborhood, usually standing outside the Financier Cafe. She’s an interesting woman and I have to giggle when I see her because I just don’t get her. I call her “Sunscreen Lady”.

www.propertiesofmatter.si.edu

Zinc nose!

She stands with her cart full of stuff, reading the Times, long stringy hair resting on her shoulders, face white with sun screen (I think), and sometimes wearing a down jacket or some other heavy outer wear on warm days. In the tiniest, quietest voice she may ask for something as you walk by – never money though. Usually a bottle of water, orange juice or the Sunday Times. Something useful.

So this one time – maybe last fall, Brett and I were at one of the Starbucks in the neighborhood when she walked in and seated herself next to me on the bench. She sat and read for a while, while I continued my work.

Not long after she sat down, she nodded off. A nice gentleman bought her a turkey sandwich and placed it on her table while her eyes were closed. Not more than a few minutes later, she woke up and saw the sandwich. She started mumbling in her tiny voice, wondering about the sandwich and then offered it to me. Yes, that’s what I said – she offered me the sandwich! She didn’t want it, guess she wasn’t hungry?! I declined graciously of course, hoping she would keep it – but she would not accept the sandwich! She said she felt bad throwing it out, but then thought she could give it to someone else who might want it. After a little deliberation with herself, she decided to toss it.

I’m thinking – did that just happen? This lady who I assumed is homeless, who we all assumed is homeless – just offered me a sandwich that someone else bought for her. Granted the gesture was nice, but … what??

I was seriously confused (and still am) and decided she must be one of those people who is actually a millionaire and is homeless by choice.Β I read about a lady like that once.

I saw Sunscreen Lady today at Walgreen’s on my way home from yoga tonight. But that’s another story πŸ˜‰

Hadad’s Movie Trailers

Comments 2 Standard

If you live in New York City, you’ve definitely seen the Hadad trailers around the city.

If you’ve visited New York City, you’ve probably seen them too. These trailers occupy blocks and blocks of space. Why? To film TV and movies which is a major revenue for the city.

In the last week, there have been signs like these:

IMG_3963

Trailers were set up on my street this past week said this:

IMG_3962

Other shows and movies filming in the neighborhood: Squirrel to Nuts featuring Jennifer Aniston, White Collar, The Good Wife, and a couple others I can’t think of right now.Β So that means guaranteed celeb sightings? Not always.

But of course, when you least expect to see someone in the business, you will.

Today the four took the bus down to the East River Ferry terminal at E. 34th Street to venture over to Williamsburg for the Flea. As we were waiting to board the ferry, the arrivals were disembarking and out first was Toni Collette and her daughter.

They were in a hurry, hence no pic. Sorry.

Other celebs I’ve seen in the past, in no particular order – A-listers to D-listers:

  • Susan Sarandon crossing W. Houston and shopping in a yoga store
  • Bruce Willis buying Sabrett hot dog
  • Katie Holmes walking in Greenwich Village
  • Tony Bennett crossing the street by Bloomy’s
  • Mark Ruffalo at the Crosby Hotel at a movie event
  • Julianne Margulies on Lex
  • Al Roker, Matt Lauer, Meredith V, Savannah, Natalie, Ann Curry at the Today Show
  • Regis Philbin outside the ABC studios
  • Bryce Dallas Howard walking into the Today Show
  • Keith Morrison from Dateline at Pink Bar
  • Kirsten Dunst walking her bike in Central Park
  • Hoda running in Central Park
  • Leighton Meester filing Gossip Girl at the St. Regis
  • Josh Charles at a movie event and out for dinner at the Crosby Hotel
  • one of the NJ Housewives outside the Pierre Hotel
  • Jimmy Fallon for tapings – guests were Michael Moore and Jennifer Aniston
  • Jon Stewart for tapings
  • Don Trump Jr walking on 2nd Ave
  • Matt Dillon outside The Waverly Inn
  • Kelly Rutherford at dinner at The Waverly Inn
  • Kiera Sedgewick crossing Madison Avenue
  • Matthew Settle leaving Pastis
  • Simon and Alex from NY Housewives
  • Rosie Perez in my school neighborhood for an event
  • Wilmer Valderamma at a school event
  • Adam Sandler by Starbucks on E 84th
  • Hugh Jackman at John Leguizamos’ show Ghetto Klown (we were sitting a few rows behind him!!)
  • Miley Cyrus in Times Square
  • Nick Cannon DJ-ing
  • Portia de Rossi and Rupert Everett at book signings
  • my very first celeb sighting was Matthew Modine – we were here on vacay in 2005, and since then I’ve seen him again on the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard and he visited my school to promote bike riding and safety

  • Ryan Reynolds!!!!! I was so disappointed I wasn’t there…
  • Bethenney Frankel
  • some reality show guy that we still haven’t figured out lol!

Keep your eyes peeled, you never know who you will see!

New Favorite Color!

Comments 6 Standard

What’s my new favorite color?

Green!

Why? Because it’s the color of my permanent resident card I’ll be getting from immigration in the next couple of months! The wait is almost over!!

The confusion then excitement I felt when I read the email from my immigration lawyer was intense! I was walking home from a Grand Central after a day at a literacy curriculum workshop when I read the email.

I just wanted to laugh out loud as I was walking! So I did! I was so excited! I tried to call hubs to share the news. No answer! My text to him: Call me!!!!! So I text Monica and Lana in my bewilderment! I had to share my confusion/excitement/bewilderment … I thought there was a mistake in the email.

My lawyer notified those of us in the green card process there would be no more advancement in the process until October, and it would be slow progress until the spring of 2014… But – unexpectedly, a huge advancement! Thank you USCIS!

After 7 years of visas and being tied to the DOE via sponsorship, I am almost free to do as I please!

Now to get the paper work together….

Summer Streets Etiquette

Leave a comment Standard

For the past 6 Augusts, Mayor Bloomberg has dedicated 7 miles of Park Avenue – from 72nd Street all the way down to Brooklyn Bridge for Summer Streets,Β on three consecutive Saturdays.

Fab idea! I love it!Β Runners, walkers, bikers, and bladers can enjoy the car-free zone from 7am-1pm on those Saturdays.

This year, with the new CitiBike system (kudos to the DOT/citibank for that), getting a bike was far easier so hubs and I decided to bike down from our ‘hood to Brooklyn Bridge. Last Saturday was really pleasant because it was a little rainy so the street was pretty open.

Biking downtown

Yesterday was a different story. Because of the perfect weather provided by Mother Nature, the streets were far busier. And of course they should have been, people are out enjoying this glorious event!

Along the route there are signs to alert you to rest stops, activity stops and this year a voice activated pop-up art installation in the tunnel just south of Grand Central.

There are also many signs to show that pedestrians should walk or run on the right and bikers should bike on the left. Makes sense right? Well, not to everyone…. so here is some etiquette for Summer Streets. Again, common sense – not so common…

To enjoy Summer Streets, or any public event like festivals, parades, etc, please follow this simple etiquetteΒ (although I know this really doesn’t apply to you – it’s more of a vent with a positive tone haha!):

  • follow the rules of the road! You are not the only person there.
  • pay attention to your surroundings,Β you are not the only person there
  • watch out for others, you are not the only person there
  • if you are biking and need to pass, look behind you before darting out,Β you are not the only person there
  • clean up after yourself, there are garbage cans everywhere
  • use your bell,Β you are not the only person there
  • teach your kids the rules of the road before you head out to the streets,Β your family is not the only one there
  • give people their personal space whether running or biking,Β you are not the only person there
  • have fun πŸ™‚

I know I live in a place where there are tons and tons of people, but just think a little. That’s all I ask πŸ™‚

Minus the few people who did annoy me, we still had a good ride! If you haven’t been out to enjoy it yet, you should!

Saw and heard this fancy music wagon both times!

Mind Mumbo-Jumbo

Comments 2 Standard

Is that like gumbo? Um, no.

It’s the mish-mash of craziness going on in my mind. You know the feeling I’m sure.

This week was filled with experiences I didn’t know I would have basically until they were happening… Participating in conference calls with prominent members of the education community, writing an Op-Ed article for the Daily News, and then appearing in segment on Good Day NY.

In addition to these career-related events, I did have time for fun at the beach, yoga, The Met, the movies. Each of these events is really a post of their own, but my mind cannot decide which to focus on, and that’s ok so I’ll just leave the list of events for now while my brain settles and refocuses.Β I’ve literally started writing three different posts and have trashed them all because my mind is not wanting to organize any of the information in a sensical fashion. So… what’s on your mind?

The Skin You’re In

Leave a comment Standard

A walk past the coolhaus ice cream sandwich truck on my way to the park for a run spawned a nice afternoon with my friend Tina.

IMG_3881

After enjoying our amazing ice cream sandwiches we walked en route to Lincoln Center. Our conversation topics were varied, one of them being running/body image/self esteem/skin conditions. Okay, I know that’s kind of a big topic.

I shared my personal struggle with acne-prone skin up until maybe two and a half to three years ago. I struggled with breakouts and scarring for many years and it really seemed like nothing was working for me. I eventually chalked the trouble up to hormone imbalances. And thankfully perhaps a combination of hormone rebalances and some awesome products helped me and my skin out of its awful mess.

Here goes my second post to endorse some of my favorite products that I think really helped my skin. So if you’re having trouble or know someone who is, here are some tips and some of the steps I took. I know finding a new product can be daunting because of the crazy number of choices.

First step was a few sessions of microdermabrasion to remove the disgusting dead skin off my poor face. I simply bought a groupon and off I went to get a good face vacuum at Red & White Spa in SoHo.

Next I went to get some new face products at Bloomy’s. I was actually just walking through one day and this very entrancing sales associate for Borghese lured me to their shop for a free mini-facial. I was sold. After the 15 minutes of the Cura-C scrub/exfoliating, toning and moisturizing, my face actually had a glow so I knew I had to purchase the Cura-C skin care line. After these first two steps, a few months and probably some hormone changes, my skin changed remarkably. I am forever grateful to that girl at Bloomy’s.

I used the whole cleaning regime, which I believe is not available anymore but has been replaced by some other products on the line.

After a couple of years of using the Borghese line (which apparently is too long to use the same product – duh me!) I noticed my skin was looking and feeling blah. It was winter after all and I was using a product for far too long.

So, I purchased another groupon and went for an exfoliating facial at The O’Live Organic Spa on 23rd Street. The lovely spa-titians use organic skin care products made in Hungary. I decided to try these Eminence products after my amazing facial hoping these products were the boost my skin needed in the dry winter.

Night cream! Used for about 3 weeks and then stored in fridge for later use.

calm-skin-chamomile-moisturizer_2252

For day time to calm skin. No SPF, but it’s in my tinted moisturizer.

I used this camomile daily moisturizer for about two months and decided I should get a third alternate in my new skin care cycle so I went to Sephora and bought a little set of Origins anti-aging products.

s1516723-main-hero

Love this set!

I love the facial cleanser and purchased a regular size after using the whole mini. I love the mimosa moisturizer because it’s very light but meets the needs of my skin. At night I’ll add some of the serum after applying the moisturizer and will use the charcoal mask every in a while to really smooth out my skin.

I hope the products I use can be useful to you. The right product can be life changing, kind of like that snicker doodle and strawberry ice cream sandwich I had. πŸ˜‰

Family Time

Comments 2 Standard

How many of us live away from our families? I know there are millions who do, and there are various reasons for doing so.

I moved away from my family in western Canada seven years ago for two reasons. First, I needed a change in my life because I was feeling stagnant, and this lead to the second reason – a career location change.

In this age of technology, it is easy to keep in touch via email, text, FaceTime, or Skype no matter how far away you are from loved ones. But really, never underestimate the value of a few days of real time together. I just wrapped up a few days of NYC time with my brother, sister in law and 9 year old niece (nephew had to stay home to work). I think to say that we had a lot of fun is an understatement. We spent our days walking and walking and talking and talking and eating and watching people and experiencing many neighborhoods in the city. In three and a half days we covered a lot of ground and I was happy to be part of some irreplaceable memories.

Some of the highlights from the week:

– strolling through Central Β Park and the watching very active animals in Central Park Zoo

– eating!!! Dinner at Guy Fieri’s new restaurant, Waffles & Dinges, S’Mac Mac & Cheese, cupcakes from Sprinkles and Baked by Melissa (family also sampled from Cake Boss), PJ Clarke’s, Hill Country Chicken, Brooklyn Ice Cream Shop

– walking the High Line and noticing the interesting architecture

– some shopping at Dylan’s Candy Shop, FAO Schwartz, Toys R Us, Century 21, Yellow Rat Bastard

– taking the short ferry ride to Dumbo and strolling through the neighborhood I started my NYC life in when I first moved here

– walking in the rain

– seeing the Broadway version of Annie

Although this plentiful list of our few days together is incomplete, the best part was catching up! Thanks T, B, and K for coming to my neck of the woods! Imagine if all families got along as well as we do…

Mostly :)y Weekend

Comments 5 Standard

My weekend was really quite satisfyingly relaxing and moderately productive which made me pretty happy. But of course amidst the happiness, there were a couple of thumbs down moments which is bound to happen with so many people living in the same space as I do. And I have to say, my thumbs down moments are pretty lame. That’s why I can’t and won’t really even file them as complaints because no one was injured, thankfully, only minimally traumatized.

Weekend smile πŸ™‚ moments:Β

– good run Saturday morning

– started watching New Girl from the beginning which made both my husband and I laugh

– finished reading my book

– nice weather on Saturday

– made a decision about the appropriate curtain rods we needed for the windows (which I had been putting off for months), bought them AND put them up

– cleaning nooks and crannies

– cooked a yumm-alicious dinner for hubby

– got a call from a special friend

Weekend thumbs-down moments:

– scarred by the ridiculously expensive and mediocre breakfast at Ben Ash after my great run (booooo!)

– near collision on the CitiBike by a delivery guy speeding around a corner into the bike lane and another dude going the wrong way in the bike lane (I hate – and rarely do I use that word – but I hate bikers who break the rules of the road!!!)

– lots of dog poop on the sidewalk (grrrrr!)

Words of advice to myself and others who get annoyed by these little moments:

– take a breath

– think of something to smile about πŸ™‚

– be thankful for those who make you happy

Β If you haven’t smiled about something today, there’s something wrong with you. Turn that frown upside down.

Go out and get a cupcake. Come on, who doesn’t love cupcakes πŸ˜‰
