Running With ADD

Let me start by saying that I surprised myself today. I thought I was be mentally blocked and physically dead, for many reasons. Have to say – my pace was acceptable, and my time decent. And that included a stop for a quick piddle at about mile 10. My Nike+ said 9:36 pace, 2:02:00, fastest 13.1 miles. Not sure about that… and… somehow I managed to run a total of 14.57 miles… Anyway, gotta check my results on NYRR.

So here’s the break down…

The morning started with me walking to the park… it was chilly but I was okay with my layers and such. Unfortunately I just missed the 6 to 59th Street and I wasn’t going to take a cab. So I walked.

Baggage was outside the park along 59th Street and really was efficient because volunteers were just collecting the bags and semi-sorting. They were just throwing them in a bunch of UPS trucks to deliver them downtown to the finish area.

Once inside the park, there were portable security checkpoints that some people walked through and others got the detector wand scanned over the body. That was a new experience for me, security at a race. Helicopters above yes, but not the body scan. But it was a big event and better safer than not.

Corrals were set up in three waves. I was in the third wave with the 20,000-29,9999 crowd of course, with average runners. We had a little bit of a wait in the frigid and windy air since the second wave was just starting. Time seemed to move quickly and before I knew it, my section was slowly moving to the start!

My face and hands were numb for the first couple of miles. Mile three I started warming up but then my LCL (I assume) started giving me grief. This pain occurred mostly while running on some uneven pavement, particularly at Central Park North then later on the bumpy streets downtown.

Once back in the park and after the freaking hills, we exited onto 7th Avenue and ran through Times Square to 42nd Street. That was fun because there were some bands playing and lots of people cheering along the gates.

As we turned towards the Hudson on 42nd Street, the wind picked up and once again it was cooooold! Damn! Dust flying in my eyes, gusts pushing me back….brrrrr! But upon turning onto the West Side Highway and out in the open, the sun was finally shining on us. That was lovely! The remaining 5 miles were in the sun, with some optional shade.

I didn’t see the mile markers for mile 9 or 10. Usually that’s around my mental wall time. But today, I just breezed through and when I saw the mile 11 marker, I told myself to get my butt in gear! Those last two miles had to make up for the bathroom break I took, which I usually don’t!

Mile 12 was unique – running through the entrance of the Brooklyn Park tunnel for the last mile and coming to surface by the South Street Seaport. And finally – finish line around the corner on Water Street! That was a lot right?!

Well let me tell you – this usual mental block I expect between miles 8 and 10 as mentioned, I didn’t even notice today – nor did I really long for the next mile marker at all – because there are so many distractions along the route. People, dogs, bike riders, cars, trees, the river, flashing lights, tall buildings. sports complexes, billboards, boats – I think I was just so distracted I didn’t even really think about running that much (except during my somewhat more than occasional knee pain).

Maybe my ADD is useful after all! Be careful and happy running!

Stay Tuned – NYC Half Tomorrow!

I’d say the NYC half marathon is a good choice for my first half of 2014. Excited to meet early in Central Park with about 30,000 other runners to spend our Sunday morning running through the park, through midtown, then toward downtown on the West Side highway. Will just have to watch out for poor road conditions on some streets due to crazy winter weather fluctuations this year… nbd.

Last night I completed my 9+1 volunteer at the Expo at the Metropolitan Pavilion. I really enjoyed taking on this role (after the “training” of course) of giving out bibs. This was a different perspective for me – checking IDs, confirmation sheets, and handing people their bibs. Then being thanked, and watching those runners walk away with a smile, checking out out their bibs and the number they are attached to for this race. I could so relate. Every time I pick up by bib, I smile. I’m excited for the upcoming race I’m about to participate in with thousands of people who enjoy running as much as I do.

That’s what I was thinking when I was trying to convince myself to go to the gym. Weather and roads still a little unpredictable to run in the park. So, the gym it had to be.

Well, I was right of course. I did feel better.

It’s just getting dressed and getting out the door that’s the hardest part. Yes, I was not looking forward to running on the treadmill for the second time this week, but I have Kathy Lee and Hoda to thank for getting through the three miles today, and The Lone Ranger for getting me through the three miles on Monday.

This morning I just felt depressed – Brett left for work, I caught up on PLL, the sky was clouding over, my mind was cluttered with unimportant thoughts. I felt jumbled, lethargic and unmotivated. But I got my gym clothes on and headed down the street.

As I walked, my body felt slow, my mind still frazzled and scattered. I was contemplating my work out on the treadmill. Blech, the treadmill. Perhaps an inclined walk. Or should I run? But I was tired. But I was feeling slow. But but but.

Once on the treadmill, I just went for it. Told myself three miles and no less. If I run faster, it’ll be over faster. So I just did it. And I felt good after. It felt good to sweat. To watch some nonsense. I got over the jiggling earphones and just ran … and I’m so glad I did.

Confirmed once again. I love running. It’s my redemption.

Forget Waiting a Week

Ok, so I just went a little race registration crazy on the NYRR site… But they just opened registration for April through June races and I didn’t want to miss out!! So I registered for 5 races! And two of the weekends are Saturday and Sunday races! So forget about racing on a Saturday then waiting until the following Saturday! Might as well race again the very next day! Check out my new scheduled race widgets along the left of the page…

What can I say? I get obsessed. But you already knew that…

Sniff… I Know, It’s Just a Widget

Today I will be removing the widgets for “2013 Completed Races”… sniff. I know, I know… those little square boxes of my scheduled running accomplishments are just little date reminders, but to me they represent productivity and growth in running. Those little boxes make me feel successful, particularly since this I’ve been sitting on my couch in this cold and blustery weather – and that means less and less outdoor winter running for now… but 2013 is over! I need room for my “Upcoming 2014 Running Event” widgets, categorized by season of course 😉 . Weeeeee!

I Am So Qualifying

I was so pumped after the ING NYC Marathon this year!

I was inspired to beat my mental block about never completing a full marathon! But….

I officially joined the New York Road Runners in September of this year. They have a 9+1 qualifying system for runners who complete many races with them. That means member runners can complete 9 qualifier races and volunteer for an event for a guaranteed entry to one of the world’s most amazing events, the New York City marathon (no longer ING).

So since September I have completed 5 of my 9 qualifying races. I was so pumped! I totally thought I had time to qualify for next year’s marathon! Only 4 more races and 1 volunteer! I was already signed up for 2 more races and had to figure out an event to volunteer for …. Until…. I read the fine print and realized that I needed the rest of my races by completed by December 31st! CRAP! New dream shattered.

Well not really. I’ll be damned if I don’t qualify for the 2015 race! I’ve already signed up for the first 2014 qualifier races! Need to get my winter training going! No wimping out this winter. I am going all in!

Hiking vs. Running – Events From the Last Two Weekends

I cannot say I like one more than the other because each activity is glorious in itself. The rewards different, the experiences unique. Of course logistically, running is very convenient and accessible for me, whereas hiking requires more planning and more complicated transportation plans.

Hiking overview: Lisa and I had a great time hiking at Bear Mountain last Saturday. Not only did we hike part of the Appalachian Trail (towards Georgia hahaha!), we stopped at the area’s Ocktoberfest and wandered through the Bear Mountain “zoo” with beer in hand. The weather was gorgeous considering it was the last weekend of October. Usually our weather at this time of year is quite nice, minus the last two years (Sandy last year and blizzard the previous year). This was a most enjoyable day.

Today’s race: Dash to the Finish Line, a warm-up to the ING NYC marathon. A little jaunt that started three blocks from my apartment (awesome), ran west on 42nd Street (awesome), up 6th Avenue to Central Park and ended at the marathon finish line of tomorrow’s marathon (fabulous). I’m pretty sure next year I will be crossing that line after venturing the 26 miles through all five boroughs. I’m driven to do it and I think I can. I have a year to prep myself mind. Oh and my body.

So what do I choose? Well you know I love running. But if I had more opportunity and willingness to seek out nearby hikes, I would probably hike more. I’ve just gotten so used to how races work, knowing what I need, etc, I’m not sure I will put in the same effort to find hikes. Unless of course they are arranged by someone else or LivingSocial again!

This morning’s race was up the Hudson Line in Sleepy Hollow. A mere 34-50 minute Metro-North train ride (depending if you get the local or express) along the Hudson River. What could be more beautiful on a fall morning?

Was hoping he’d turn around, then saw him right near the end as I was about to run up the last hill…

The highlights for me:

– gorgeous morning to run

– Halloween themed

– Headless Horseman on site (although my pic isn’t great)

– hilarious announcer

– leaves in their transition colors

– tons of creative and funny costumes

– hilly yet really nice course

– decent snacks afterward, and beer sample from the tavern across the street

– some music along the course, my favorite was the kid rock band

– tons of families coming out of their gorgeous homes to cheer us on

– beautiful architecture of the old houses, decorated of course

– zombies with rubber runner body parts, and silly signs along the route

This was a fun race and will definitely be a repeat for me, except next year I hope I can conjure up someone to come with me (and in costume).
