Throwback Thursday #2 – There’s This Other Woman

Comments 2 Standard

In September I wrote about this lady I see in my neighborhood to whom I refer to as “Sunscreen Lady“.

Well, there’s this other woman.

What can I call her… Let me think. How about “Big Brother Lady”? Yep, she thinks she’s being watched. By the MTA. Okay we all are being tracked somehow. But she is very active about letting the MTA know that she knows that they know about her knowing about what they know … oy.

I’ve seen her three times. Three times is a lot in this city, considering the number of people. Twice on city buses and again last Friday in Grand Central on the 4, 5, 6 platform.

Here’s what she does:

She has these rectangular signs – paper, cardboard, and envelopes – that I assume she writes messages on … She displays her messages – none of which I’ve seen – to the video surveillance cameras in the buses and in the subway stations, mouthing words to the camera as she points to her signs. As she is showing the camera her signs, she is oblivious to others around her – like no one is there but her – which is kind of strange considering she thinks she is being watched. Anyway, is it rude for me to look at her messages?  Not sure… but I guess if she’s sharing her messages to the video cameras, I can read them too? I’ll keep you posted if I see her again and pass on her message.

P.S. Now you get my reference in my Wordless Wednesday post, right?

P.P.S. Sleep with one eye open tonight… You never know who’s watching, or who’s trying to send you a message. 😉

Fitbit One, You Are So Cute

Comments 2 Standard

This little gadget is so awesome, and so cute (this pic is pretty close to the actual size). My cute little Fitbit tells me a lot of things I’ve always wanted to know.

For example:

  • number of steps I make
  • how many flights of stairs I take
  • miles walked
  • number of sleep hours I get
  • how long it takes me to fall asleep
  • how many times I’ve woken up in the night
  • how many restless periods of sleep
  • times for all of these events (in a nifty bar graph)
  • how many calories I’ve burned
  • what type of activity I’m engaged in (light, active or very active – color-coded of course)
My day - January 7, 2014

My day – January 7, 2014

And if I wanted, I could:

  • log in water consumed
  • set goals or make meals plans (um, no)
  • track calories eaten
  • connect with Fitbit friends
  • add photos

I wear mine all the time now, and no one knows (even me)! And – Brett has also bought into the Fitbit nation, whoa!! 🙂

We’re a Week In… Still Working on That Resolution?

Comments 2 Standard

I’m sort of a go-against-the-grain type of person. I really don’t like to conform or be considered a “norm”, so I’m not one to make resolutions. Sure in the past I probably tried to come up with some goal, but really I don’t January 1st  to tell me to be a better person. Every day is an opportunity to do that.

There is no research that supports making a resolution makes a person more active, healthier, a better friend, a better wife, husband, student or whatever. We already know that resolutions are pretty short lived. Why? Because to be truly successful you need to change either your lifestyle or who you are. When your resolution becomes who you are, you have successfully made a lifestyle change.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for being ambitious and setting goals… I just don’t have the calendar dictate that to me, like I said.

Truthfully, I find the word resolution to have a negative connotation. Like I have this huge gap in my life that lacks any positive energy or flow. Like I offer no benefit to society. Sure we all have improvements to make and goals to set, but I just don’t buy into the resolutions business.

Not only that, resolutions are very overwhelming. We’re talking a year-long “goal” that I would consider normally comes in the form of a lot of sacrifice. How is that going to make me a better person? Thinking too long term about what I should or shouldn’t eat is very daunting. That I can’t have a cappuccino during the week or I need to reduce my intake of chicken fingers? Not going to happen. It’s so restricting and suffocating. Oh man, I think I need a cupcake.

Do I need to make a resolution to work out 5 times a week starting January 1st? Do I need to schedule my gym workouts so I go? No, although I can have an idea that I might go to a yoga class on Mondays, but I’m not going to have it set in stone (because I am sitting here on my cozy couch staying warm instead of walking in the cold to run on a boring treadmill 😉 ). During the week I can stay on a schedule, however on weekends I have a hard time being places at a certain time. I need that unstructured time. I need the flexibility and I feel like resolutions do not have that. Maybe I just don’t know how to make resolutions…

On the other hand, I can handle long-term academic, career-related or running goals. I can handle knowing I will be spending a couple of years in school getting a Master’s, or take some teaching-related trainings throughout the year. I love that stuff. I can register for races months in advance because races aren’t really something I need to work on completing. I just do them. So do I make a resolution to take another course or run more races? I don’t think so because I already know I’m going to do these things… So… I don’t get it.

Anyway, my “resolution” is to stick with no resolutions. Any moment of any day is a chance to grow as individual. To be a better me for me, and for others.

So if you’re a resolution person and need to make one to get you on track to a better you, I wish you all the success and fruitfulness you are looking for. Or you could just try this one:

Sniff… I Know, It’s Just a Widget

Today I will be removing the widgets for “2013 Completed Races”… sniff. I know, I know… those little square boxes of my scheduled running accomplishments are just little date reminders, but to me they represent productivity and growth in running. Those little boxes make me feel successful, particularly since this I’ve been sitting on my couch in this cold and blustery weather – and that means less and less outdoor winter running for now… but 2013 is over! I need room for my “Upcoming 2014 Running Event” widgets, categorized by season of course 😉 . Weeeeee!

What races (running events) are participating in this year? Check out my widgets for registered races so far.

Oh Walter Mitty

Comments 2 Standard

An NYC snow day yesterday meant my day was open for sleeping, reading, writing, and watching movies. My movie buddy Tina often reads my mind so I was excited when she and I decided to head out into the cold and sloppy mess to watch Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

What can I say about Ben Stiller and the movies he directs, produces, and stars in: they are exactly what I want to see. His portrayal of how real people think, respond, and behave is perfect regardless the character portayed: Walter Mitty, Derek Zoolander, Larry Daley or Gaylord Focker. I always learn something about people through his portrayal of his crafted characters.

So here are my lessons learned from Walter Mitty:

  1. It’s okay to daydream
  2. Budgets are important
  3. Risks are hard, but necessary in order to grow as a person
  4. It feels great to do something nice for someone else, especially when they do not expect it
  5. We confuse disappointment in a person with not knowing all the information about a situation
  6. Doing something unexpected and spontaneous makes us frantic and uncomfortable at first
  7. Pushing our limits creates a new level of self-respect
  8. You have more of an impact on people’s lives than you think

Number 8 is particularly my favorite. This idea has copious amounts of potential to make us all ponder our purpose, as well as contemplate the words and actions we send into the world. So thank you Ben Stiller, for your ingenuity in character development and thoughtful representation of real people and their quirks. I look forward to your next piece of work.

Songs on Repeat

Comments 7 Standard

Brett and I are those people who obsess over songs, sometimes listening to the same song all day long.

Here are some of our song obsessions (mostly mine). Some are new songs and others are long withstanding obsessive repeats:

  • Arms, Distance and Miles by Christina Perri
  • Bonfire Heart, Blue on Blue, Miss America by James Blunt (in the past I was obsessed with his 1973 album)
  • Say Something by A Great Big World
  • Make You Feel My Love by Garth Brooks then Adele
  • Volcano by Damien Rice
  • Life for Rent and Mary’s in India by Dido
  • Lights by Ellie Goulding
  • Tiny Dancer and Your Song by Elton John (also the Moulin Rouge version of Your Song sung by Ewen McGregor)
  • Float by Flogging Molly (this one is Brett’s – this song does drive me a bit bananas after a few listens)
  • You & I and Be OK by Ingrid Michaelson
  • Let Her Go by Jasmine Thompson
  • Wish You Well by Katie Herzig
  • Human, Space Man, and A Dustland Fairytale by The Killers
  • Sign No More and Little Lion Man by Mumford & Sons
  • Leave, Falling Slowly, Say it to Me Now, Sleeping, and Gold by Steve Kazee & Cristin Milioti (from Once on Broadway – best show I’ve seen btw)
  • Story of my Life by One Direction (Shhhh)
  • Stay by Rihanna (but we prefer the Barkhouse version 😉 )
  • Chasing Cars and You Could be Happy by Snow Patrol
  • I Want it That Way by the Backstreet Boys (Ha! Yes…)
  • Anything Bon Jovi from the albums Slippery When Wet, New Jersey, Cross Road

*This list of course not limited to these songs by any means.

I have a strong emotional memory to songs, as many people do; and the memories associated with many of these songs are ones from times in my life I wish I could capture in a bottle.

I’d love to hear the songs you put on repeat! I hope my list brought some fond memories to you. I’m sure many of your repeats will spark more memories of mine!

Throwback Thursday #1 – 2014 Edition “Grad ’93”

Comments 5 Standard

Last week over the holiday break I was in hometown Alberta for Christmas Eve at mom and dad’s. Since my brother, sister in-law, nephew, niece and I took a drive past our high school (my brother’s and mine), I thought it was appropriate that my #tbt this week be a high school graduation day photo. That day was 20 (and a half) years ago…

Wait…

What?

Two decades? Seriously? Nooooo.

Sometimes high school doesn’t seem that long ago and other times it seems like a lifetime when I think about how our lives have all become so different.

Circa June 1993, my parents back yard

Circa June 1993, in my parents back yard (I’m in red)

The five of us were very close throughout high school and university however, our chosen paths eventually lead us all in our own directions. Although we parted physically, we are all from the same place – and have our cherished memories of each other.

Countless experiences and interactions with life in general have shaped our lives since then – careers, boyfriends, husbands, friends, kids, travel – but essentially I know inside we are still the same people. Although I am not as close to all of these wonderful ladies as I once was, I know that who we were then, is also who we are now: good old friends. Despite distance, time apart, or who our new friends are – my memories tell me that will remain.

(P.S. I did have a lunch date with Joc in green last week, and had a cocktail date with Alison in black but had to cancel due to feeling like crap! 😦 . Tanya in purple and I are in contact on FB, and Monica in blue and I email every once in a while to catch up).
